As spring arrives in Florida, boaters gear up to enjoy longer days and warmer waters. It’s the perfect time to inspect and tune up your vessel before peak boating season begins.

General Inspection & Maintenance

Before heading out, conduct a full inspection:

  • Hull and deck: Look for cracks or signs of damage that need repair.
  • Propeller: Check for dings or bent blades that could affect performance.
  • Cables and hardware: Examine for signs of wear, rust, or corrosion.

The engine also deserves extra care:

  • Oil & filter change to ensure optimal performance.
  • Cooling system: Check coolant levels and the water pump’s condition.
  • Battery & spark plugs: Test battery charge and replace worn spark plugs.

Onboard Safety Check

For safe boating, verify the following:

  • Life jackets: Ensure good condition and enough for everyone onboard.
  • Fire extinguishers and flares: Make sure they’re up-to-date and accessible.
  • Navigation lights: Test functionality and replace batteries if needed.
  • First aid kit: Restock essential supplies.

Trailer Inspection

If towing your boat:

  • Tires & bearings: Check for wear and correct tire pressure.
  • Lights & connections: Ensure everything works properly.
  • Winch & straps: Look for signs of wear or damage.

Water Test Before the Season

After all maintenance is done, do a water trial to confirm:

  • Engine performance and throttle response.
  • Steering and control system functionality.
  • GPS and electronics operation.

Don’t Forget the Paperwork

  • Registration & permits: Ensure everything is current and on board.
  • Insurance policy: Review your coverage before the season begins.
